At approximately 7:10 p.m. Monday, the Niagara Falls Police Department responded to a call of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in the 1000 block of Portage Road.
A 2013 Toyota, operated by a 63-year-old Niagara Falls man, was traveling north on Portage Road when he allegedly collided with the pedestrian. The unconscious woman was taken to ECMC by ambulance for treatment of significant head and leg injuries. She is currently in the trauma ICU awaiting surgery.
The driver of the Toyota was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for evaluation. He is being charged with vehicular assault in the first degree, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, driving while intoxicated and circumventing an interlock device. He was to be arraigned Tuesday morning.
The drive is innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
