Congressman Brian Higgins announced Western New York will receive more than $4.4 million in additional federal aid to combat and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Higgins said, “This federal funding, included in the CARES Act, is targeted to help communities address public health needs for people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. The latest allocation brings the total awarded to Western New York for this purpose to over $10.5 million.”

Procured through the Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) program, the additional funding supplements over $6.1 million in ESG money previously allocated for the area. The grant will be distributed to local municipalities including Buffalo, Niagara Falls, the Town of Tonawanda and Erie County to provide relief and assistance for homeless individuals and families.

Homeless individuals are amongst the most vulnerable groups for infection and transmission of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. This funding, allocated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, is intended to help communities whose homeless populations are most severely at risk of being impacted by COVID-19 based on data from the 2010 census.
