The Niagara History Center is taking applications to fill a paid summer internship of an office assistant funded by the Grigg-Lewis Foundation workshop program at the museum.

Eligible applicants must be students currently enrolled in college or accepted for college this fall, and must be residents of eastern Niagara County or attending a Niagara County college. Applicants cannot be a close relative of a History Center staff or board member.

The office assistant will work in Lockport – primarily at 215 Niagara St., but also at the Erie Canal Discovery Center (24 Church St.) and the Bond-Hawley House (143 Ontario St.) Lockport. Staff will work 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from mid-May to mid-August.

This individual should possess good organizational skills, Microsoft Office knowledge, multitasking ability and ease in speaking before a group. The assistant will be required to assist in interpreting the Erie Canal Flight of Five Locks for school groups and tourists. The position will also include light housekeeping and assisting with moving light objects, such as books and artifacts, writing, filing, coping and working in the museum gift shop.

Summer is particularly busy at the History Center, with many new visitors and research requests. The position will enable staff to be more responsive to visitors’ needs. The diversity of duties and skills in the museum setting offers students new learning experiences, including understating how a nonprofit organization works, and learning how to advocate for nonprofits and volunteerism.

The deadline for applications is midnight March 9. Interested students can visit niagarahistory.org for an application or call the History Center at 716-434-7433. Email an application to Executive Director Mellissa Dunlap at [email protected].
