Annual contest selects the work of 12 artists to be featured in a 2021 national calendar

CURE Media Group, an industry-leading multimedia platform devoted to cancer updates and research that reaches more than 1 million patients, survivors and caregivers, revealed the winners of its second annual CURE Calendar Contest. The 12 selected artists will have their work featured in an exclusive 2021 calendar.

A press release said, “The winning submissions were selected by a committee of CURE staff members from 121 entries and represent the beauty and creativity that can be found in the cancer experience. In a variety of media, including painting, photography, sculpture and more, the pieces not only serve as a therapeutic outlet for the artists, but also aim to inspire all those who view them.”

The 2021 CURE Calendar Contest winners are the following:

  • Alison Akin of Livermore, California, for “Healing Spirit Paintress”
  • Bonnie Annis of Newnan, Georgia, for “The Unseen Woman”
  • Vicki Friedman of York, Pennsylvania, for “Protection”
  • Gregory Lambert of New Braunfels, Texas, for “The Elephant in the Room”
  • Yoni Mayeri of Orinda, California, for “Pandemic Dream”
  • Carol A. Miele, RN, BS, MPH, of Davenport, Florida, for “The Winter of My Chemo Tent”
  • Kathy Roth of Peoria, Illinois, for “The Monarch”
  • Linda K. Stewart of Fort Washington, Maryland, for “Acceptance 2X”
  • Gina Stratton of Willis, Texas, for “In the Moment”
  • Peri Schwartz of New Rochelle for “Studio #22”
  • Saulmon C. Addison of Brentwood, for “A New Day”
  • Kathleen Maxian of Lockport for “Beautiful Survivor”

After being diagnosed with advanced stage ovarian cancer in 2009 at the age of 47, Maxian’s doctor suggested she needed to find her “purpose." In 2012, Maxian founded the Ovarian Cancer Project (OCP), a nonprofit to support other women with ovarian and gynecologic cancers. For the past seven years, she has been cancer free, and “has taken an opportunity to meet hundreds of exceptional women and their families facing ovarian cancer. These women from all walks of life know the gift of another day, find meaning in life's simplicities, and are unafraid to share their deepest fears, daily struggles and coveted successes.”

A few years ago, Maxian took up watercolor painting, and found she was drawn to painting people. Many times, her subjects are women with cancer, like her winning piece titled “Beautiful Survivor.” Maxian said she is in awe of these survivors and enjoys being with them whether it is through her work, or in her studio trying to capture the essence of their spirit.

“Congratulations to these amazing artists who were hand-picked to be showcased in our 2021 CURE calendar,” said Mike Hennessy Jr., president and CEO of MJH Life Sciences, parent company of CURE Media Group. “The number of works we have received from artists across the United States for this contest is truly unbelievable. We thank everyone in the CURE community who submitted their art online to be featured in our calendar and CURE art gallery.”
