The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance announced the launch of its financial education program to benefit all New Yorkers, but particularly the self-employed and low-income taxpayers in underserved communities.

The Tax Department developed this online curriculum based on taxpayer feedback and as part of an ongoing drive to make more New Yorkers aware of the tax benefits and free resources available to them.

The financial education program is part of the Tax Department’s broader mission to improve the taxpayer experience and ensure its programs and policies are fair and inclusive.

“This online resource advances our effort to increase financial literacy and improve the taxpayer experience for all, in part, by raising awareness about beneficial programs and filing obligations,” New York State Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Michael Schmidt said. “We will continue to enhance and expand the program’s content as new issues arise and in response to taxpayer feedback.”

The financial education program is broken into seven modules, covering a range of topics – from filing requirements and tax credits to free tax filing options and predatory tax preparers. It includes tools one can use to track tax deductions and a mileage log for transportation workers. At the end of each module and at the end of the course, participants have an opportunity to celebrate with a certificate of completion.

More than 1,000 taxpayers have accessed the program since it launched in October. Access the financial education program at www.tax.ny.gov (search: financial education).
