Halloween weekend: Community pumpkin light-up at Hennepin Park

This year, the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce has shifted gears from its normal busy event schedule. With state guidelines regarding mass gatherings still in effect, it has been hard to plan the usual, fun, holiday-inspired activities the region is known for.

President Jennifer Pauly said, “Halloween is around the corner and we have created a new event were the community can get involved! ‘The Pumpkin Spectacular’ will take place Thursday, Oct. 29, through Halloween night (Saturday, Oct. 31). The community pumpkin light up display will feature pumpkins carved by you!"

Have a jack-o’-lantern your family, business or organization carved? Bring it to Hennepin Park (corner of Center and South Fourth streets in Lewiston) anytime Thursday, Oct. 29, through Halloween and join the community display of pumpkins.

The Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce will provide battery-operated candles for every pumpkin brought to the park. Candles will be inserted and turned on by 5 p.m. each night. Stop by and view them all in the evening (social distancing guidelines must be followed when viewing the pumpkin display).

“The Pumpkin Spectacular” is sponsored by the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce and Baker Farm Market & U-Pick.

“We recommend that you stop by Baker Farm Market & U-Pick (2100 Youngstown Lockport Road, Ransomville) to purchase the perfect pumpkin for your creation,” Pauly said.

Town of Wheatfield cancels Fairmont Park Halloween celebration

By Michael DePietro

Interim Tribune Editor

The Town of Wheatfield announced Monday it is canceling its Halloween Fest at Fairmont Park. Speaking on the decision, Supervisor Don MacSwan said it would’ve been impossible to ensure social distancing and conduct contact tracing.

“We’re going to take an abundance of caution and cancel the Halloween Fest that was scheduled at Fairmount Park on Saturday, Oct. 24,” MacSwan said. “It is our duty, as town officials, to avoid a potential spreading event on town soil. We are committed to do our part to protect our staff, attendees and the residents of Wheatfield.”

Despite the decision, the town says Halloween “is still on,” with trick-or-treat hours held from 4-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. The town recommends all participants follow state and CDC guidelines and take caution in all Halloween-associated activities.

Youngstown announces trick-or-treat hours

By Nicole Quarantillo

Youngstown Village Trustee

The leaves are changing and it is getting darker earlier now, so we all know what that means: Halloween is right around the corner!

The Youngstown Village Board is excited to see the kids dressed up this year, but we do have a few updates and changes due to COVID-19 and the current guidelines set in place by the governor and CDC.

Trick-or-Treating will be on Oct. 31 from 4-7 p.m. As a reminder, if you do not wish to have trick-or-treaters, please keep your porch light off – and for those out, please respect those houses that do not wish to participate this year. Remember to stay socially distant, 6-feet apart, and wear a mask that has been approved by the CDC if you cannot safely distance.

The board would like to remind parents to be careful when putting a mask on your child. Having them wear a CDC-approved COVID-19-safe mask and then a Halloween mask could prevent them from breathing properly. We want all of our community members to be safe during these times, and we thank everyone for their part in doing just that.

As always, each member of the Youngstown Village Board is here for the members of our community. Please reach out to any board member with any questions, comments or concerns.

Happy Halloween!

Cuomo on Trick-or-Treating

On Sept. 15, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced he would not ban trick-or-treaters from going door to door this Halloween during an interview with News 12 Long Island with Tara Joyce.

Joyce asked, “Will you put a ban on trick-or-treaters going door to door?”

Cuomo replied, “I would not ban trick-or-treaters going door to door. I don't think that's appropriate. You have neighbors – if you want to go knock on your neighbor's door, God bless you and I'm not going to tell you not to. If you want to go for a walk with your child through the neighborhood, I'm not gonna tell you you can't take your child to the neighborhood; I'm not going to do that – I'll give you my advice and guidance and then you will make a decision what you do that night.”
