20th anniversary signature event rescheduled out of COVID-19 pandemic

Susan G. Komen Upstate New York has rescheduled its annual Western New York “More Than Pink” Walk amid health concerns around COVID-19. The original date of June 13 has been rescheduled to Saturday, Sept. 5. The event will remain at Buffalo RiverWorks.

“The decision to reschedule to fall was not made lightly,” said Andrea Moran, executive director for Komen Upstate New York. “The health and wellness of those we serve is always our top priority. We know several of the walkers that join us that day are going through or have just finished treatment for breast cancer. Many have compromised immune systems and are at a higher risk of health concerns.”

The “More Than Pink” Walk is Western New York’s largest event devoted to ending breast cancer, and draws 2,500 participants, volunteers and supporters. In 2019, more than 240 breast cancer patients and survivors participated in the event.

Funds raised support programs that advance Komen’s goal to reduce breast cancer deaths in the U.S. by 50% by 2026. Locally, that includes support for screenings and diagnostic programs, as well as education and barrier reduction initiatives for those who are currently receiving treatment. Additionally, a portion of funds raised advance breakthrough research for breast cancer. Currently, nearly 70% of research within Komen’s portfolio is addressing metastatic, or stage IV, breast cancer, for which there is no cure.

“One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, and there are a significant number of underinsured women in our region. That’s why Komen’s community investments are critical to the health and welfare of those we love,” stated Colleen Nossavage, “More Than Pink” Walk chairwoman and Komen Upstate New York board member. “Our event day is special – it’s a day where we come together to cherish, honor and remember those who have been affected by breast cancer. It’s also a day where we celebrate the work we are doing as a community to fight this disease – and we won’t stop until a cure is found. We’re grateful our sponsors, team captains and survivors are with us in this fight. They understand that it’s best for us to reschedule our event to September during these special circumstances.”
