Due to concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 20th anniversary Buffalo Marathon Weekend, presented by the Buffalo-Erie Marathon Association Inc., is being postponed.

“Holding a gathering that will put more than 10,000 people in close proximity weeks after being told to practice social distancing goes against governmental recommendations as well as the marathon’s mission of doing good for the community,” said Greg Weber, marathon executive director/race director. “The health and wellness of everyone involved in the event has always been and remains our top priority.”

Key points to note:

•The Marathon Weekend will resume May 29 and 30, 2021.

•Registrants retain their registration for 2021.

•Those not able to attend the event in 2021 can defer their entries free of charge for the 2022 or 2023 event.

•Registrants also may sell or transfer their entries at no charge.

A 501(c)(3) organization, the Buffalo-Erie Marathon Association Inc. (www.buffalomarathon.org) organizes and presents the annual Memorial Day Weekend, which includes a 5K, “Diaper Dash,” kids mini-marathon, “Ruffalo Stampede” dog race, along with full and half-marathons. The companion Kaleida “Heart to Heart Relay” benefits the cardiac care units at Buffalo General Hospital and Gates Vascular Institute. The events combined include 8,000-plus runners from more than 10 countries and 45 states.

The weekend is supported by more than 1,500 volunteers from 40-plus not-for-profit organizations who, over the event’s 19 years, have received grants totaling more than $664,000. The event has an estimated annual economic impact of more than $1,500,000.
