Bundle up: This year’s winter in Western New York is going to be cold! That’s the winter weather prediction made Friday by Stryker, the harbor seal at the Aquarium of Niagara.

The Aquarium of Niagara teamed up with local full-service energy company NOCO to deliver the winter weather outlook. The site’s rescued seals spend Western New York winters in their comfortable outdoor habitat where they naturally adapt to all kinds of extreme weather conditions.

NOCO has been providing home heating services to the WNY community since 1933. The company offers sustainable energy solutions that help Western New Yorkers keep their homes comfortable during the cold months in a way that promotes a healthier environment.

NOCO and the Aquarium of Niagara found mission symmetry in that, as a press release said, “both organizations promote responsible decision-making that has a positive impact on the environment and wildlife.”

In addition to Friday’s event, NOCO has committed to the development of a new exhibit at the Aquarium of Niagara. The exhibit, which is expected to debut in December, will illustrate the impact of illegal wildlife trafficking on wild fish populations. It will feature an Asian arowana that was confiscated at the U.S.-Canada border, and an ocellate river stingray.

"It is through the support of our community and partners that the aquarium has been able to increase its influence and visibility across the region,” President and CEO Gary Siddall said. “These partnerships amplify our ability to spread awareness of the many threats and challenges to aquatic life.”

“NOCO has been evolving alongside the communities we serve for nearly 90 years,” said Scott Ernst, vice president of operations. “Many environmental issues are impacting us, Stryker, his friends at the Aquarium of Niagara, and in the wild. Like the aquarium, NOCO is committed to conservation and sustainability solutions that help combat environmental problems such as climate change, overfishing and loss of diversity of species.”

This new partnership comes as the Aquarium of Niagara celebrates the recent opening of its newest exhibit, “M&T Bank Shark & Ray Bay.” The interactive touch pool marks the third major project in three years, during which time the venue has made more than $10 million in capital improvements.
