25th annual World Pumpkin Weigh-off this weekend, as well as ‘Dinosaurs in the Corn Maze’

One of The Great Pumpkin Farm’s most popular events, the annual World Pumpkin Weigh-off, takes place this weekend as part of the farm’s 25th annual Fall Festival.

Judging for The World Pumpkin Weigh-off begins at noon Saturday, Oct. 3. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded as soon as all the entries have been officially weighed. The owner of the heaviest pumpkin at the World Pumpkin Weigh-off will take home the top prize of $1,000 (with the chance to win five times that amount and earn a world record if their pumpkin weighs over 2,624 pounds). Cash prizes will also be awarded for second through sixth places.

Last year’s winner was Karl Haist of Clarence Center, whose pumpkin weighed in at 2,269 pounds. The Great Pumpkin Farm saw the first 1,000-pound pumpkin during its 1996 Fall Festival – 1,061 pounds – which made it into the Guinness Book of World records.

It’s also “Dinosaurs in the Corn Maze” weekend. Vinnie and Teddy, the ever-popular animatronic dinosaurs, will roam the corn maze both days from noon until 4 p.m. looking for their prey. The Balloon Experts will also amaze with their balloon characters and designs this Saturday and Sunday.

Fall Festival runs weekends from 10 a.m. to dusk. Through Sunday, Nov. 1. The event also takes place Monday, Oct. 12 (Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day).

The Pumpkin Palace is open and features Halloween decorations, a bakery and candy store as well as the Witches Brew Bar & Café (limited days and hours). Guests can purchase pumpkins, cornstalks, gourds and cider. There will also be farm animals (no petting or feeding due to COVID-19), a hay maze and playground.

Admission to the Fall Festival is $10 per person, with children ages 2 and under admitted free. Presale tickets are available online (limited capacity; tickets are also sold at the gate if not sold out online first). Masks are required at all times everywhere for ages 3 and over.

The Great Pumpkin Farm is located at 11199 Main St., Clarence. More information is available at www.greatpumpkinfarm.com.
