Previously postponed due to COVID-19

Sunnking to hold 10th ‘e-Scrap for Camp’ fundraiser despite a months-long layover

Sunnking, an electronics recycling company based in Brockport, has reopened registration for its annual “e-Scrap for Camp” fundraiser in Buffalo. This follows a four-month pause due to COVID-19. The program raises money for Camp Good Days and Special Times, a nonprofit organization that aims to improve the quality of life for children, adults and families whose lives have been affected by cancer.

Companies can register for free online at eScrapforCamp.com. The deadline to sign up is Sept. 25.

The free, business-focused fundraiser was to take place in May; however, the company decided to postpone electronics collections when nonessential companies had to close their doors during the statewide lockdown.

"It wasn't the right time to hold an event like this," said Robert Burns, director of marketing for Sunnking. "Priorities have changed a lot this year, and we were all focused on the health and safety of our employees and staff. But cancer doesn't slow down because of a pandemic, so we can't either, and that's why we were always determined to keep the program going."

Through the donation program, Sunnking works with local businesses to recycle unwanted electronics, generating funds for Camp Good Days and Special Times. 2020 marks the 10th year Sunnking has held the “e-Scrap for Camp” fundraiser. In 2019, Sunnking gifted a check worth $15,496 to the nonprofit and has donated more than $100,000 throughout the program's existence.

"The program is super-easy, and it's a win-win for the community," said Lisa Booz, WNY regional director of Camp Good Days & Special Times. "By donating those old computers and devices, you can directly put a smile on someone's face, which we all could use right now. Through this program, we are gifted the advantage of raising awareness about our organization and helping the environment."

Businesses and organizations in the Buffalo area are encouraged to sign-up to collect electronics from their employees, friends and family members for one week during October. Sunnking provides boxes to gather those devices and offers free, contact-less delivery and pickup. For every pound of electronics recycled from participating organizations during the fundraiser, a portion of the proceeds is donated to Camp Good Days to fund future programs.

How It Works

√ Each participating location collects electronics from employees, friends and family for one week during October.

√ Collection boxes and pallets will be provided by Sunnking the week before each location's scheduled collection at no cost.

√ Electronics will be picked up by Sunnking the week after the scheduled collection week and recycled at no cost.

√ Sunnking will track and record the net weight of electronics recycled from each participating location.

√ At the end of the campaign, Sunnking will donate money to Camp Good Days for every pound of electronics recycled.

Camp Good Days, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children, adults and families whose lives have been touched by cancer and other life-threatening challenges, was founded by Gary Mervis in 1979, following the diagnosis of his youngest daughter, Teddi, with a malignant brain tumor.

What was started to provide Teddi and 62 other children with cancer (21 from Rochester, 21 from Buffalo, 21 from Syracuse) with a residential camping experience has grown to become one of the largest organizations of its kind, having served as a model for other organizations and cancer treatment centers around the world. Providing residential camping programs and year-round recreational and support activities and events, Camp Good Days has served more than 43,000 campers from 22 states and 28 foreign countries.
