With the start of fall right around the corner and cooler temperatures on the horizon, NOCO is offering a variety of household tips to help Western New Yorkers not only stay warm, but also save on their energy costs this fall and winter.

“Now is the perfect time to take stock of your furnace and heating habits, before freezing temperatures and subzero wind chills enter our region,” said Tom Wrate, general manager, NOCO HVAC. “Ensuring your furnace is operating efficiently and taking steps like lowering your thermostat just a few degrees can add up to significant savings on your heating bills.”

It advises readers consider implementing one or more of these energy-saving tips from NOCO at their home this fall and winter:

√ Replace your furnace filter. A dirty filter can put unnecessary strain on your furnace or cause damage, increasing your overall energy costs.

√ Add caulk or weather stripping to seal leaks around doors and windows to prevent heat from escaping.

√ Set your thermostat to the lowest temperature that is comfortable for you and your family.

√ Lower your thermostat every time you leave the house. If you have not already, replace your analog thermostat with a programmable one to enable you to set the temperature for different times of the day based on your family’s schedule.

√ Check your air vents to be sure no curtains or furniture are blocking them.

√ Ceiling fans can pull double duty in the colder months. Setting the fan to rotate clockwise will trap heat inside to keep rooms warmer during cooler months.

√ Get a humidifier. During fall and winter, the air inside of your home can be dry. Moist air feels warmer and holds heat better, so a humidifier can help when your thermostat is set at a lower temperature.

√ Reach out to your natural gas supplier to make sure you’re taking advantage of the best rates and programs.

NOCO provides thousands of homes across Western New York with the energy products they need – from heating, ventilating and air conditioning to natural gas, electricity, propane and heating oil.
