Erie County and New York State Police agencies will conduct more than 250 hours of intensive DWI roving patrols over the Labor Day weekend.

Through Aug. 30 of this year, 1,005 drivers have been arrested for impaired driving in Erie County. The COVID-19 shutdown reduced annual arrest totals but recent weeks have seen an increase in DWI arrests. Impairment by drugs other than alcohol typically comprises 7% of Erie County DWI arrests. During the shutdown, other than alcohol impairment rose to 12%. Officers will be on the lookout for cues of impairment by other drugs other than alcohol. Motorists are advised to make arrangements for a sober ride home if celebrating.

This campaign is a cooperative effort of the Erie County Chiefs of Police Association, the New York State Police, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and the Central Police Services Department of Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz.
