Drive-in movie night debuts at Artpark

It was a summery Tuesday night in Lewiston, and people were out at Artpark, but the entertainment was a little different than usual.

The venue kicked off a new drive-in movie series. This was in lieu of the traditional “Tuesdays in the Park” concert series, which won’t take place this year due to COVID-19-related crowd restrictions in New York.

Still, more than 100 cars lined the main parking area on South Fourth Street as well as the “Niagara 1979 Painted Parking Lot” up the hill. Patrons were excited to return to Artpark, and many could be seen sort of camping out in and around their vehicles, socially distanced from others, but still enjoying the community atmosphere – as well as the feature film, Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Waltz.” Music aficionados fondly recalled watching The Band’s legendary farewell concert.

Another film, the iconic “Grease,” will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday.

“Shine a Light” follows at 8 p.m. next Tuesday, with “School of Rock” playing at 7 p.m. next week Thursday.

Movies are projected on LED screens at the front of the respective lots. Vehicles can park in every other spot, with plenty of prime viewing areas available. Audio is transmitted via car FM radio, but was also available via park speakers for “The Last Waltz.”

Advance tickets are $25 per car, and include a $17 concession credit. They are available at artpark.net and tickets.com. Service fees apply for online orders. Guests also can call 716-754-4375 to purchase by phone from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, or one hour before movie showtime. The “Painted Parking Lot” has a higher ticket price.
