All of us have been dealing with a new normal these last few weeks and many changes have been made to the way we are doing everyday things. Due to the current community restrictions, The Nancy Price Memorial 5K Run will be a virtual race.

You might be thinking, "What is a virtual race?"

Runners, walkers and joggers can get out in the fresh air and complete their own 5K anytime between now and May 9. Once your run/walk/jog is completed, you submit your time to Paul Beatty by email at [email protected].

The proceeds from this race support the Nancy Price Scholarship, which is presented to one or more seniors from Lew-Port High School who have been active in the Youngstown recreation programs and participate in community volunteering.

All virtual race participants will receive a T-shirt and also an opportunity to win one of 20 $25 gift certificates from area businesses.

Registrations are being taken by mail to the Village of Youngstown offices with paper applications available at local businesses. One may also register online at www.nancyprice.itsyourrace.com or go to racemanagementsolutions.com and click on the Nancy Price Virtual race link.

The fee for participating in the virtual race is $20 for those aged 19 and up, $15 for 18 and under (until May 7), and increases $5 after, with all submissions due by noon on May 9.

As you run your virtual race, you may choose to follow the same path that this race usually takes through the beautiful Village of Youngstown along the river walking path at Fort Niagara State Park, starting and finishing at the Youngstown Volunteer Firehall; or you can follow your own 5K journey.

We are so grateful to our major race sponsors this year; without them our scholarship fund would be greatly impacted. Thank you to DiMino's Tops in Lewiston, the Kiwanis International Club, Modern Corporation, Tedesco Enterprises, RCR Yachts, Fox Fence Company, Baker Farm Market, Victoria’s' Family Hair Care, Steve's Heating and Cooling, and Porter Drywall and Painting.

The Nancy Price Memorial 5K has been taking place since 1993 in Youngstown. It was originally a river run. In 1995, the race and a local scholarship were dedicated to the memory of Nancy Price, a director of Youngstown Recreation for 20 years, who died after a long battle with cancer.

Even though the race this year is different from the usual, we hope to have the support of the community and runners/walkers this year.

Participants will be notified about T-shirt delivery, and prize winners announced after the results are posted.
