April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Pinnacle Community Services has kicked off its second annual campaign by painting Niagara County blue (the color of child abuse prevention) in a virtual way.

Last Friday, the team logged into its weekly online staff meeting in blue attire, in recognition of Wear Blue Day. In addition to a coloring contest, it will be holding its “Paint the County Blue” social art event on Facebook Live at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 16. Attendees will create a pinwheel-themed work of art using the materials they have in their homes.

For those who are able, Pinnacle invites attendees to provide a $10 donation via www.PinnacleCS.org to support its essential programming. The agency will also feature tools, program highlights and resources throughout April on its social media accounts.

By ensuring parents have the knowledge, skills and resources they need to care for their children, everyone can help prevent child abuse and neglect by creating strong and thriving children, youth and families in our communities. Research shows that protective factors are present in healthy families. Protective factors are conditions or attributes of individuals, families, communities, or the larger society that mitigate risk and promote healthy development and wellbeing.

Promoting the following protective factors is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect:

•Nurturing and attachment

•Knowledge of parenting and of child and youth development

•Parental resilience

•Social connections

•Concrete supports for parents

•Social and emotional competence of children

Pinnacle Community Services is committed to child abuse prevention and intervention throughout the year. Its mission: “Side by Side, Step by Step…we strengthen our community by supporting and empowering individuals and families on their journey,” is fulfilled through parenting services, youth services, Passage domestic violence services, and care management services.

As one domestic violence survivor reflected upon leaving Passage House, "Living here has made me a better person and mother.”
