When business teachers Cheryl Chamberlain asked her entrepreneur class what to do with the snack inventory at their high school store, Casey’s Corner, students replied “donate it!”

With that in mind, Chamberlain, pictured, saw a need on social media with former Grand Island student and Navy sailor James Weatherston. He serves on the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt and recently has been in the news as the aircraft carrier has been affected by the coronavirus.

Weatherston and his shipmates are in need of books, toiletries and snacks. So, Chamberlain with the help of her husband, Greg, got together and on the phone.

“The donations just started coming,” Chamberlain said. “All in all, Island Ship Center, Cappellino Cadillac, the Casey family and numerous others donated toward a nice-sized shipment for the crew. What started as a distance learning project turned into a grand idea. It is what ‘VikingStrong’ is all about.”
