County clerk asks federal leaders to intervene in ‘confiscation of PPE and ventilators’

Erie County Clerk Michael Kearns released the following statement Saturday: “Today I stand with our county executive and all residents of Western New York to oppose Gov. Cuomo’s plan to enlist the National Guard to confiscate much-needed personal protective equipment (PPE) and ventilators from the doctors, nurses, health care workers and residents of upstate and Western New York.

“I was once an elected state official, but now I sit in the seat once occupied by Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul. She was an Erie County clerk and remains a daughter and advocate of Western New York. Lt. Gov. Hochul, I am appealing directly to you to stop the governor from implementing this executive order.

“Our state and local governments, including the governor, have been under great pressure. Be a voice of reason in his ear. You cut the ribbon on facilities at Buffalo’s new medical campus. Don’t stand by as the governor cuts our supply of PPE and ventilators. This is a time of uncertainty and his executive order has created fear.

“If we continue down this path, I would call on our local federal officials to join me in reaching out to President Trump to federalize the National Guard to protect our constituents. Though this (is) a last resort, our doctors and nurses are fighting to save lives. They should not be fighting to keep their PPE and ventilators, too.

“In conclusion, I ask you to join me in my daily prayer for those medical professionals who are working the frontlines to battle this virus and helping heal our community. Our Lady of Victory, pray for us.”
