The Niagara County Department of Public Works announced Thursday the Lockport portion of the Tonawanda Creek Road Rehabilitation and Tonawanda Creek Slide Stabilization project will be open to two-way traffic by the end of the business day Friday.

“We appreciate the public’s patience as we completed this portion of the Tonawanda Creek rehab,” said Garrett Meal, commissioner of Public Works. “This overall project is very significant and we are looking forward to moving onto the next phase of the project.”

Meal said this completed portion extended from Transit Road East to Willow Wood Drive. The detour route, one-way traffic control and all temporary traffic control devices will be removed to allow normal two-way traffic. The work completed included mass excavation of the failed Tonawanda Creek slope, construction of a geosynthetically reinforced soil system and construction of a new road surface.

Meal said the next phase of the project has already begun and is located in the Town of Pendleton, from approximately Wendelville Fire Department at Campbell Boulevard to Ship N’ Shore Restaurant.
