Statement from Speaker Carl Heastie:

“Today I was informed that a third Assembly member, Kimberly Jean-Pierre, has tested positive for COVID-19. I have informed the Department of Health upon learning this news as this member was in Albany yesterday to participate in our legislative session, although she did not have any contact with other members or staff. She was tested yesterday after a family member became ill. I have spoken to Kimberly and she has told me that she is back home in her district, self-quarantining and doing well.

“Yesterday during session we took extraordinary steps to keep everyone safe, and followed CDC guidelines. Based on the protocols we put in place, we believe she did not come into close contact with anyone including her staff in Albany. I have ordered a deep cleaning of her offices in addition to the regular cleaning of the Assembly chamber and any other areas she may have visited in order to ensure the safety of everyone.

“My heart goes out to Kimberly and her family as well as everyone who has contracted this horrible virus.”
