Acting Niagara County Sheriff's Office Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti recently reminded businesses and organizations who utilize a multi-line telephone service (MLTS) that, as of Feb. 16, new requirements have been enacted by the Federal Communications Commission.

On Aug. 1, 2019, the FCC adopted rules to implement Kari’s Law and Section 506 of RAY BAUM’S Act to help Americans reach 911 services more quickly. These new federal regulatory obligations mean enterprises operating MLTS are required to provide the following:

•Direct access to 911 without dialing any prefix, post-fix or trunk access code (Kari’s Law)

•Notify on-site security whenever 911 is dialed within the enterprise (Kari’s Law)

•Provide a dispatch-able location with every 911 call (Section 506 of RAY BAUM’S Act)

A press release noted, “In short, these requirements are for all businesses utilizing multi-line systems and will increase public safety by providing Niagara County law enforcement/public safety answering points with a real-time location of a 911 call within potentially sizable structures, notify designated personnel within the building that a 911 call was made so they may assist the person(s) in need, and allow occupants to call 911 directly without a hindrance.”

“Ensuring our businesses and organizations are aware of these changes is important so first responders can respond appropriately in any emergency,” Filicetti said.
