Third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students in Lewiston-Porter’s multiage service learning classrooms are collecting items for soldiers stationed overseas. As part of “Peace For Our Patriots,” the youngsters are sending troops pieces of home to make tours of duty more agreeable.

Students are selling meticulously crafted colorful paper cranes to raise money for postage.

A press release from teacher Joy Khatib explained, “The Japanese culture has treasured the crane as a symbol of honor and loyalty. The Japanese people believe that if a person or group folds 1,000 cranes, they will be granted their greatest wish. Students in the multiage (classes) will fold 1,000 cranes and their greatest wish is ‘Peace For Our Patriots.’

“This service learning project will allow us all to show honor and loyalty to our United States overseas military troops!

“After reading the story ‘Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes,’ multiagers decided to learn to fold paper cranes. The cranes are being sold for $1 during lunch periods the entire month of February. All proceeds are being used to create boxes of care for our overseas troops and to cover shipping costs.”

The River Region community is invited to send in a monetary gift for postage, or donate one of the following items – as suggested by Veterans of Foreign Wars Downriver Post 7487:

  • Pens
  • Coffee (smaller can or freeze-dried packages)
  • Dry creamer
  • Sugar packets
  • Baby powder
  • Hard candies (no chocolates)
  • Soap
  • Shampoo
  • Baby wipes
  • New or gently used DVD movies, comedies, TV shows

Khatib also invited readers to submit names and addresses of soldiers, so students can specifically support local troops.

“It would be our pleasure and honor to send a box of caring to them!” she said.

Contact Khatib at 716-754-8281, ext. 3104.

Students are competing to see which age group can gather the most items. Grade-specific collection barrels are located outside of the Intermediate Education Center office.

The IEC’s mailing address is 4061 Creek Road, Youngstown, NY 14174.
