Congressman Brian Higgins announced federal grants totaling $95,000 through the National Endowment for the Arts for Arts Services Initiative of Western New York, Albright-Knox, Squeaky Wheel Film & Media Art Center, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, CEPA Gallery, and Explore Buffalo.

“Western New York’s thriving arts community contributes to our quality of life and our economy,” Higgins said. “Resources for the arts are too frequently stretched thin and at risk of elimination. This federal funding represents an investment in programs that enrich the lives of those in Western New York.”

Squeaky Wheel will receive $20,000 to help support the Buffalo Youth Media Institute, a media arts education program conducted in partnership with the Buffalo Center for Arts & Technology.

Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra was granted a $15,000 federal grant to support the West Side Connection, an educational program that engages students attending Buffalo Public Schools and neighbors in the vicinity of Kleinhans Music Hall to explore diversity through music.

Explore Buffalo will use the $15,000 it received to help support a Junior Explorers Design Workshop, a program that introduces elementary and middle school students to the architectural design process.

•$25,000 in NEA funding will be dedicated to the Albright-Knox Art Truck, which delivers art programs and hands-on activities directly to local neighborhoods, expanding art access to new and underserved audiences.

CEPA Gallery has been granted $10,000 in federal funding to support an advanced photography program for youth.

Arts Services Initiative of Western New York was awarded $10,000 to support the Arts Access program, which provides lower-income residents in Erie and Niagara counties with greater access to art and cultural destinations, performances and programs.

These organizations were among 1,187 organizations in 294 congressional districts to receive over $27.3 million in funding from the first round of fiscal year 2020 grants.

On average, NEA grants generate more than $800 billion annually for the U.S. economy.
