The VIP Food Service students from the Niagara Career and Technical Education Center spread some holiday cheer to troops in Afghanistan. For the second year, students in Lisa Cook’s class helped out a local Lewiston organization that tries to make the season brighter for men and women who cannot be home with their families.

Victoria Filicetti, whose daughter Madison is in Cook’s class, and her neighbor, Ramona Siriana, have been sending cookies to troops for many years and said they were glad to have some help in their mission.

“Ramona has asked her friends and family to bake cookies so that our soldiers can have a homemade treat during the holidays. Hundreds of cookies are donated each year and they are shipped to bases stateside and overseas. Miss Cook’s class made dozens of cutout cookies and they were decorated beautifully,” Filicetti said.

Cook said it meant a lot to her and to her class to participate.

“I think what these ladies have started in an amazing idea. It warms my heart to know I can help out, but also to teach the students how important it is to give to others and support those who our fighting for our country,” she said.

Cook noted the son of a former personal care aide she worked with was one of the recipients.

“When he returned from his duty, he told her he was in tears when he received cookies. That is what the holidays are all about,” she said.
