Lewiston Veterans of Foreign Wars Downriver Post 7487 has released a rare commemorative “first day cover” that will become a prized collector’s item. The envelope displays the VFW symbol, the front and back of the VFW’s commemorative coin, and the “Circle of Honor” postage stamp that has a Lewiston, NY, postmark dated Nov. 11, 2019 – the day the new monument was dedicated at Academy Park during a dramatic nighttime ceremony.

Post Cmdr. Bill Justyk said, “We can’t thank the post office enough for their full cooperation in helping with our dedication and support of veterans. They bent over backwards to get permission to postmark this envelope on Nov. 11, an official federal holiday when the post offices are normally closed. That in itself will make these highly sought by collectors. But when you add the fact we had our own ‘Circle of Honor’ stamp, along with the definition of the eternal flame that no other memorial in the nation offers, we stand proud knowing that our special tribute to veterans will be remembered throughout the generations.”

The VFW said only 60 of the 400 “Circle of Honor” stamps that were printed were postmarked on the commemorative envelopes. Most of the 60 will be distributed to VFW members and premiere sponsors. However, about a dozen will be held back for collectors. They can obtain an envelope in return for a $100 donation to the VFW.

All proceeds will go to the memorial maintenance fund. Interested collectors can contact quartermaster Vince Canosa at 716-343-4358 to make arrangements.
