Nearly 1,000 Western New Yorkers are expected to plunge into the frigid waters of Lake Erie on Saturday, taking part in the 13th annual Buffalo Polar Plunge to support Special Olympics New York athletes. Fundraising for the plunge is ongoing, at: www.PolarPlungeNY.org/Buffalo.

Registration runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the plunge beginning at 2 p.m. at Woodlawn Beach State Park, 3580 Lake Shore Road, Blasdell.

It is anticipated that the Buffalo Polar Plunge, together with Friday’s “Super Plunge,” will raise more than $200,000 to benefit local Special Olympics New York athletes. Last winter, 10,000 people plunged into cold waters around New York, raising more than $1.5 million total.

Individuals and teams interested in registering for Saturday’s plunge can do so at www.PolarPlungeNY.org/Buffalo. Donations are welcome and all funds raised help support the cost for athletes to participate in training and competitions.

Special Olympics New York is the largest state chapter in the country, serving more than 67,000 athletes across New York with year-round sports training, athletic competition, and health screenings. The organization also partners with more than 170 schools statewide to offer Unified Sports. All Special Olympics New York programs are offered at no cost to athletes, their families or caregivers.
