100-year Zonta celebration Nov. 8

The Zonta Club of Buffalo is having a big celebration, exactly 100 years to the date of Zonta’s founding in Buffalo – and in exactly the same place, Statler Towers.

Women’s advocacy organization Zonta International will mark its centennial with a cocktail party from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at the Statler Towers, 107 Delaware Ave., Buffalo.

A century of progress in women’s rights began in Buffalo, when prominent Buffalo journalist, playwright and civic leader Marian de Forest had a vision to empower women through service and advocacy. She called to action a group of like-minded professional women in March 1919 at the Statler Hotel. They organized Zonta with the goal to empower women and use their expertise in service to their communities.

On Nov. 8, 1919, nine clubs that had broken away from the Quota organization became chartered as the Confederation of Zonta Clubs. Today, Zonta International has more than 30,000 members in 63 countries, including a club on Grand Island, working together to make gender equality a reality for women and girls.

Zonta International works to help achieve a world in which women’s rights are recognized as human rights and every woman is able to achieve her full potential.
