Five girls from Grand Island Girl Scout Troop 31312 earned their Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest honor for Cadette Girl Scouts in grades 6-8.

Abbie Bentley, Berin Celik, Lauren Coombs, Megan Reynolds and Wynonna Roberts, currently ninth graders at Grand Island High School, spent the last year making 50 fidget blankets for senior citizens living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The blankets were donated to Bristol Village and Juniper Glen where they will be used by the residents that are in memory care and have dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Twenty-five blankets were donated to each facility. Each blanket consists of different activities like beads, zippers, ribbons, shoelaces, buttons, snaps, and belts. These are for the patients to keep their hands moving and to retain their fine motor skills.

To complete the Silver Award, the girls had to work at least 50 hours and make their project sustainable. Along the way they learned many skills like sewing, public speaking, time management, teamwork and planning. The girls will receive a Silver Award pin, Silver Award patch, and certificates for their efforts.
