Niagara County Veterans Day programs

Additional Veterans Day events in Niagara County this weekend include:

•The O. Leo Curtiss American Legion Post 830 in Ransomville, together with Youngstown VFW Lake Ontario Post 313 and the Town of Porter, will sponsor the second annual Chiavetta’s chicken barbecue and basket raffle fundraiser from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co., 625 Third St. Tickets are priced at $11 pre-sale at area businesses, or $12 at the door.

Eat-in or take out. All proceeds from the event will go to support Ransomville American Legion Post 830 and Youngstown VFW Lake Ontario Post 313.

•The Aquarium of Niagara will thank veterans and active military personnel for their service to this country by extending a special discount during Veterans Day weekend.

All veterans, active military personnel, and their families will receive half-off the venue’s regular admission prices from Saturday through Monday. Special prices for veteran/military families are: adults, $7.45, children (ages 2-17), $5.45 and seniors (60-plus), $6.45.

In addition, there will be special, patriotic sea lion shows at 11 a.m., 1 and 3:30 p.m. each day.

The Aquarium of Niagara is located at 701 Whirlpool St., Niagara Falls. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Veterans Day weekend.

•Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown will hold a special Veterans Day event starting at 9 a.m. Monday. All military personnel, veterans and their families are welcome, with free admission in appreciation for their service to this country. Guides will be onsite giving hourly orientation tours. Visitors need only to present their military ID at the admissions desk.

 An open house will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Officers Club. Learn about the fort’s role in the 20th century as an induction center and POW camp. Admission to the Officers Club is free and open to the public.

•The Niagara Aerospace Museum will welcome veterans, free of charge, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and Monday. Admission will provided to all active duty and retired military personnel, including National Guard and Reserve members, with valid ID. For more information, call 716-297-1323.

•The Niagara History Center will hold a Kids Veterans Day event at 10 a.m. at 215 Niagara St., Lockport.

The program is for children ages 7 to 12 years old. It will focus on three major wars: the War of 1812, the Civil War and World War I. Children can learn about the Tuscarora’s history and culture, the brave soldiers who were native to Lockport, and the technological innovations developed during the wars.

•Youngstown VFW Lake Ontario Post 313 will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at Veterans Park, Third Street in Youngstown. Area residents are invited to attend.

•The Niagara SPCA is offering a “Pets & Patriots” program in honor of Veterans Day. Adoption fees will be waived for individuals on active duty, honorable discharge, service-disabled veterans, and those retired from military service.
