Obituary: Joyce Mary Hocker Van Hattum

Joyce Mary Hocker Van Hattum, born Dec. 18, 1930, in Coloma, Michigan, passed on May 4, 2019.

Joyce is survived by her son Steven Van Hattum (Jann), daughters Shari Schmidt (Johnny Carlson), Susan Simpson (Jack), Sally Kelley (Kevin), and Sandra Wakefield (Scot); grandchildren Peter Van Hattum (Allison), Jason Van Hattum (Angela), Tracey Schmidt, Ashley Schmidt (deceased), Tiffany Carlson, Lauren Reynolds, Taylor Reynolds, Aiden Reynolds, Michael Kelley (Logan), Thomas Kelley, Kathryn Kelley, Carli Wakefield (Justin Simpson), and Kimber Wakefield; and her 10 great-grandchildren.

Joyce was the wife of Rolland Van Hattum, and after Rolland’s passing, the life partner of Ralph Brown, a former Grand Island resident.

Joyce resided on Hennepin Road for many years until October of 1998 when she retired to Green Acres, Florida. Joyce moved to Cumming, Georgia, in 2017 to be close to family.

Joyce’s accomplishments include being a RN for Grand Island OB/GYN Dr. Cunanan, who delivered many Grand Island babies. She was an active member of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church, a member of the Buffalo Launch Club, a member with standing in the Red Hat Society, and a benevolent contributor to many global charities. Joyce was a world traveler who stepped on every continent.

A memorial service will be held on July 6, 2019, at Elmlawn Cemetery, Delaware Avenue, Tonawanda, where Joyce’s ashes will be interred.
