Town of Porter a Clean Energy Community

Fri, Nov 8th 2019 06:00 pm

The Town of Porter recently received designation as a Clean Energy Community by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority for its efforts in reducing energy use, cutting costs, and pursuing clean energy locally.

Announced in 2016 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the $16 million clean communities initiative provides grants to eligible communities to implement energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable development.

Porter was specifically recognized for completing four of 10 high-impact clean energy actions identified by the NYCERDA initiative. Included were the earlier installation of solar panels at Town Hall and the Porter Highway Department garage; the recent installation of a dual electric car charging station at Town Hall; use of a new Chevrolet Volt (ZEV) driven daily by town staffers; and completion of high-impact action energy code enforcement training by Town Building Inspector Peter Jeffery

“This designation is the result of our staff’s hard work,” Supervisor John “Duffy” Johnston said. “The Town of Porter will continue to work towards other clean energy goals, and is adopting a solar energy law this month.”

He said the NYCERDA designation also provides the town the opportunity to apply for up to $5,000 in additional clean energy projects, with no local cost share or impact.
