Fundraising is underway for those who plan to “take the plunge” into the frigid waters of Lake Erie and raise funds to benefit the Special Olympics New York athletes in Western New York. The “Polar Plunge” event will take place Saturday, Dec. 7, at Woodlawn Beach in Hamburg. Registration begins at 11 a.m., with the plunge taking place at 2 p.m.

The Special Olympics New York Polar Plunge is a unique pledge event that has become the premier annual fundraiser of Special Olympics New York across the state. Participants raise money for the athletes of Special Olympics New York by asking family, friends and co-workers to support their efforts in “Freezin’ for a Reason,” as they take the plunge into chilly waters.

Last year, nearly 1,000 plungers braved the frigid waters at the event while spectators watched with excitement. More than $200,000 was raised.

Organizers of the 2019 “Polar Plunge” have a goal of $250,000.

New this year is the “Super Plunge,” an event within the “Polar Plunge” where elite plungers who raise a minimum of $2,500 will deep dive every hour on the hour for 24 hours. This event will start a2 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6.

Individuals and teams interested in registering can do so by visiting: www.PolarPlungeNY.org/Buffalo. Donations are welcome. All funds will help support the cost for athletes to participate in training and competitions.
