In just the first week of school, a new program at Veronica Connor Middle School has made a major impact, the Board of Education was told at its Monday meeting.

VCMS Principal John Fitzpatrick told the board of “A brand new journey here at the Middle School” is creating a new culture of kindness at the school and smoothing the transition for sixth-graders new to the building.

“It’s called the WEB program Where Everyone Belongs. The journey and the program is really about connecting with students in a very meaningful way that is done student-to-student,” he said.

“I have to say it has already made an immediate impact on our building in only three days of school, and one orientation day and two WEB leader training days,” Fitzpatrick said.

Teacher Jillian Stapleton, who spearheaded the program with teacher Deanna Przepiora said selected seventh-grade leaders were chosen last year and paired with incoming sixth graders this year.

“This is a mentor program where the eighth-graders help the sixth graders adjust and feel welcome to the middle school,” she said.

The result is building positive relationships beginning at an orientation and lasting throughout the school year.
