The Historical Association of Lewiston’s September program is titled, “D Day, the Greatest Landing in Modern Military History.” The event will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah Fellowship Hall, 915 Oneida St.

With this year being the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landing, HAL asked Greg Kinal to start the new season by presenting the background, planning and execution of the largest amphibious assault in modern history. He will emphasize Ike’s planning and the complications that could and did affect the lives of thousands of troops. The program will show the awful loss of life on this day, as well as the courage U.S. forces showed to conquer the enemy.

Kinal was born in Buffalo. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in social studies education from Mansfield University in 1970 and went on to receive a masters degree from SUNY College at Buffalo in 1974. Kinal was hired at Pembroke Central School in Genesee County in 1970 and has been teaching social studies at that institution for the past 49 years. He is an adjunct professor at Genesee Community College in Batavia, teaching psychology, political science, history, sociology and study skills at GCC’s satellite campuses, including Attica Correctional Facility, Warsaw and Pembroke. Kinal also taught GED classes at the Tonawanda Indian Reservation in Basom, and lectured at the summer migrant program in Batavia in the 1970s. Kinal and two of his colleagues sponsor a summer trip to Washington, where they have taken vets to see memorials.

In addition, Kinal is active in community activities. He is an active fireman with the Elma Fire Co., and on the lecture circuit offers speeches on Americana to numerous historical societies and organizations. He is a 20-year participant in the Ride for Roswell, and led a teacher/community group to Albany to lobby for stricter DWI laws after a 1987 accident claimed the lives of three Pembroke students and their driver education teacher.

This community event is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served.
