Funding will help programs improve access to treatment, increase number of clients served

The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (NYS OASAS) announced the availability of up to $5 million in funding for OASAS-certified outpatient treatment programs. Up to 50 awards of $100,000 each will be made to programs to assist them in expanding services, with the goal of improving immediate access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT).

Funding for this initiative is distributed to New York state through the federal state opioid response grant and is being administered by OASAS through a request for applications (RFA).

“We are committed to investing in programs and services for opioid treatment and recovery to help individuals and families struggling with addiction,” said Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, co-chair of the State Heroin and Opioid Task Force. “This funding will expand medication-assisted treatment at programs to ensure facilities have the resources they need to deliver proper care and support. In New York, we want to make sure people have the access and opportunity to lead healthy and safe lives as part of our continuing efforts to combat the opioid epidemic once and for all.”

“Being able to access treatment is the first step towards a life in recovery for many people affected by substance use disorders,” OASAS Commissioner Arlene González-Sánchez said. “With this funding, we are making it easier for them to receive immediate access to medication-assisted treatment and the individualized care that they need to rebuild their lives from addiction.”

This funding will support outpatient programs with a focus on opioid use disorder (OUD) services in developing standards to ensure immediate access to care. Goals for implementation of OUD services include facilitating same-day appointment access, immediate initiation (within 48 hours) of MAT, and continuity and retention in addiction treatment services. This will result in an increase in the number of clients served by each provider.

The full RFA can be accessed here.

OASAS-certified outpatient programs provide treatment services to individuals who suffer from substance use disorders, as well as their family members. The specific treatment plan is determined based on the needs of each individual patient.
