Porter Empty Return awards local students

Porter Empty Return has announced the winners of the 2019 Eco – Echo Awards. This year, the scholarships were presented to graduates of both Wilson and Lewiston-Porter high schools.

Awards were based solely on the response to a single question. All graduates were encouraged to participate. The $500 winning scholarship and two $250 runner-up scholarships were handed out at school award ceremonies in June.

Porter Empty Return proudly reports the top prize of $500 went to Lewiston-Porter’s Miguel Bautista, while both of the runner-up awards went to Wilson graduates Cassidy Hoover and Courtney Brown.

Miguel will study computer engineering at the University at Buffalo Honors College. Cassidy will spend her first two years at Niagara Community College focusing on art. Courtney will attend Niagara University and study biology, with the goal of becoming a teacher.

Porter Empty Return said, “All three are remarkable individuals destined for success.

“Your community support not only made these awards possible, but last year raised nearly $14,000 for area groups such as the Boy and Girl Scouts, multiple churches and fire companies, as well as over 70 different organizations. Two notable groups were the ... Care-n-Share program and Angelo Sarkees’ Deposits for Food.

“Returning empty cans and bottles is not only be good for your pocket, but also promotes positive activity aimed at helping others, and helps to keep our area clean.

“Summer is here. So think green, be safe, and, once again, thanks for all of your efforts.”
