Lewiston-Porter budget, BOE vote is Tuesday

Sat, May 18th 2019 07:00 am

With the district’s budget vote and Board of Education election on Tuesday, May 21, this coming week will be busy at Lewiston-Porter.

Voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Community Resource Center. The district’s $48.487 million budget and capital project will both be presented to the community for approval. Voters will also vote for three announced candidates – Jodee Riordan, Betty VanDenBosch Warrick and Anne H. Orr – who are seeking election for the three open BOE seats.

Under the $48.487 million plan the proposed increase to the tax levy will be 1.99%, below the tax cap threshold of 2.49%. This translates into a $349,235 savings for taxpayers.

Lewiston-Porter meets the requirements of the state’s Property Tax Freeze Credit and taxpayers will receive a refund from NYS in November. The refund equals the increase to the homeowner’s school taxes.

Due to variations in the equalization rates for the towns of Lewiston and Porter, taxes in the Town of Lewiston will increase by 55 cents per $1,000 and taxes in the Town of Porter will decrease by 63 cents per $1,000.

The budget maintains all current programs and advances STEM education, foreign language education and literacy programs along with full implementation of one-to-one technology. It provides full support for the needs of exceptional students grades K-5 by expanding the elementary enrichment program to the Intermediate Education Center and supports and expands character development education by taking the Leader in Me program in grades K-12. The budget supports professional development and maintains current class sizes and existing pre-K, art, international and co-curricular programs and athletics. It also keeps Lew-Port’s fitness facilities open and affordable to community and returns the full Community Education program to district residents.
