On Saturday, June 8, vacant and underutilized buildings will be transformed into a public art initiative known as “Art on Oliver Street.” This initiative, led by Lumber City Development Corp. and the Oliver Street Merchants Association, aims to beautify the Oliver Street corridor, promote walkability, and bring attention to the unique buildings in North Tonawanda.

More than 50 Western New York Artists submitted for the project. Pieces were selected by a panel made up of members from the local arts community. In all, 31 pieces of varying mediums have been reproduced and will be on display in storefront windows on Oliver Street between Thompson and Wheatfield streets.

In addition to the “Art in the Windows” project, a mural designed and painted by well-known muralist Chuck Tingley will be completed on the side of a building at the corner of Oliver and 1st streets.

“This project will assist us in meeting our revitalization goals for the Oliver Street corridor as well as enhancing the local business community,” said Laura Bernsohn, planning and development specialist at Lumber City Development Corp.

The day includes live music, refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres from 1-4 p.m. at Project 308 Art Gallery, 308 Oliver St. There also will be an art walk and reception. This event will feature a gallery show of submitted pieces, an opportunity to meet the artists, sales of original pieces, as well as guided walking tours of the windows.
