The New York Power Authority is encouraging visitors of all ages to participate in a sculpture contest, which will be one of the featured activities at its “Every Day is Earth Day” celebration, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the Niagara Power Vista, 5777 Lewiston Road.

The sculptures should be made of recyclable materials, such as egg and milk cartons, newspapers, toilet paper rolls and plastic grocery bags. The entries can be brought to the Niagara Power Vista any time between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. leading up to the event, and until 2 p.m. on the day of the event. Contest entry forms will be available at the Power Vista reception desk.

Judging will take place at 3 p.m. by Buffalo sculptor Lawrence Kinney. Prizes will be awarded in various age categories, as well as a group entry and people’s choice award. Artists are encouraged to be as creative and imaginative as possible, and to draw inspiration from the world around them.

•The event will feature many “green-themed” activities, exhibitors and crafts. Enjoy the original environmental songs performed by The Greenheart, a solar-powered eco-folk-rock band sharing solutions to climate challenges through music, art and visuals.

•Plant seeds with the Cayuga Island Garden Club, make crafts with University Heights Arts Association and the New York State Parks Interpretive Center. Other exhibits include the Girl Scouts, Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve and WNY Stormwater.

•Visitors can also enjoy free rides on the Niagara Scenic Trolley between the Niagara Power Vista and the Gorge Discovery Center during the event.

•In addition to Earth Day activities, guests are invited to enjoy the all-new, state-of-the-art exhibits at the Niagara Power. Visitors can take a seat in a 4-D theater virtual roller coaster ride, create a transmission distribution system on a one-of-a-kind transmission grid table, build a dam or simulate the coordination of power across the state during bad weather.

Parking and admission are free at the Power Vista. Contact the Niagara Project Power Vista at 716-286-6661 or visit http://www.nypa.gov/niagarapowervista for additional information on the Earth Day and other upcoming events.
