Students gained hands-on interview experience while employers ramp up summer hiring efforts

On Thursday, March 27, Niagara-Wheatfield High School held a summer job fair for students. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the high school’s adult learning center, local employers visited Niagara-Wheatfield High School to conduct job interviews for more than 60 students. Employers participating in the event included Delaware North, Elderwood, Express, Fantasy Island, Maid of the Mist, Niagara Jet Adventures, Tim Hortons, Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours and Tops Markets.

Representatives from each company not only conducted interviews, but also provided feedback to students on their interviewing skills. For many of the students, this was their first interviewing experience and the feedback was very valuable.

This event was beneficial to both employers and students: employers having access to an eager pool of applicants for open seasonal positions, and students receiving hands-on experience in conducting themselves in a professional manner.

Jessica Keller from Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours said, “I was blown away by the ambition and the drive the students have.”

This was the first time Niagara-Wheatfield High School held this event, which was organized by school counseling interns Megan Girasole and Jennifer Paterson, and school counselor Lisa Lindamer.

Based on the success of the job fair, tentative plans are being set to repeat the event next year.
