The Niagara USA Chamber, at its annual Honors Gala on March 15, honored Niagara University as the 2019 recipient of the “Green Initiative Award.”

The university underwent a campuswide conversion to LED lighting, an initiative that resulted in reducing Niagara University’s carbon footprint by over 1 million pounds. The effort was spearheaded by the university’s facility services department, which oversaw the replacement of 16,900 fluorescent tubes in 30 campus buildings with LED bulbs, increasing the lighting brightness in most areas by 20 percent while decreasing electric consumption for lighting by more than 50 percent.

“As a binational institution located near one of the world’s most recognizable natural resources, Niagara University prioritizes environmental stewardship,” said the Rev. James Maher, C.M., NU president. “This recognition from the Niagara USA Chamber is a wonderful affirmation of our efforts to be excellent stewards of our natural resources.”

The Niagara USA Chamber is the countywide chamber of commerce serving Niagara County in the Buffalo Niagara Region. It serves to advance economic development, promote commerce and tourism, provide value-added services to members, advocate for business and, by these actions, improve quality of life for the region.
