Pappas announces ribbon-cutting for consumer debt defense legal clinic

Thu, Feb 14th 2019 04:20 pm

The Western New York Law Center is expanding its Niagara County consumer debt defense legal clinic to include sessions held in North Tonawanda.

Since the inception of the hub for services started by Alderman Robert Pecoraro in 2015, a residential need arose for consumer debt legal advice. With this need, the Western New York Law Center and the City of North Tonawanda announced the collaboration of its Niagara County CLARO into North Tonawanda. The CLARO project provides legal advice related to consumer legal issues and assists consumer debtors with preparing legal papers to represent themselves in court to avoid unfair default judgments.

Since 2012, CLARO has helped thousands of Western New Yorkers eliminate or avoid civil judgments totaling several million dollars, by connecting them with volunteer attorneys to help defend often frivolous or abusive debt collection lawsuits.

Pecoraro is joined by North Tonawanda’s Clerk/Treasurer Matthew Parish, Assistant City Attorney Nicholas Robinson, and the Western New York Law Center Attorney Paulette C. Campbell, Esq., and the Community Outreach Coordinator Paralegal Connie Joyce in this initiative.

Beginning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Feb. 19, the CLARO Project will hold free walk-in sessions on the third Tuesday of every month from 10 a.m. to noon at the North Tonawanda City Hall, located at 216 Payne Ave., North Tonawanda, in the second floor main conference room.

At these free sessions, visitors can meet with an attorney to discuss their consumer legal issue. Visitors are encouraged to bring all paperwork related to their issue to the session.

Those with any questions can call 828-8414 (WNY Law Center), 695-8540 (North Tonawanda mayor’s office) or 695-8555 (North Tonawanda clerk/treasurer’s office).
