'Western New York's Place in Black History': League of Women Voters to present speaker Eva Doyle

Members and friends are invited to join the League of Women Voters of Buffalo/Niagara to observe Black History Month with an award-winning pillar of the community. Eva Doyle will present “Western New York’s Place in Black History” on Friday, Feb. 15, at the Scotch ’n Sirloin Restaurant, 3999 Maple Road, Amherst. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., with the speaker at noon and lunch to follow.

Retired from 30 years as a teacher in the Buffalo Public Schools, Doyle writes and lectures extensively on African-American history. Her columns have appeared locally in the Criterion, the Challenger and The Buffalo News, as well as in newspapers across the country. A community activist, radio host and author of 12 books, Doyle is a natural and professional storyteller. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Capella University, where her dissertation topic is “Integrating African American History into the School Curriculum.”

Doyle’s many honors include two Black Achievers in Industry Awards; 2012 Buffalo News Citizen of the Year; 2016 New York State Distinguished Woman of the Year; two Erie County Citizen of the Month citations; the 2017 Red Jacket Award from the Buffalo History Museum; and the 2018 Whitney Young Award, the highest honor conferred by the Buffalo Urban League. She is featured on the Legends of Western New York banners in Martin Luther King Jr. Park and on the Freedom Wall in Buffalo’s African American Heritage Corridor.
