Lancers eclipse century mark in big victory

In the early goings of the 2018-19 high school basketball season, Lewiston Porter has made a knack for scoring a lot of points – averaging 83.6 points per game. Friday night, the Lancers hit their highest season total, eclipsing the century mark.

The Lancers defeated the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons in front of the home crowd, 100-53.

L-P never trailed in the game, getting off to a quick 6-0 start in the first quarter. Less than three minutes into the quarter, N-W called a timeout, trailing, 14-5.

Four different Lancers scored in the opening frame, including Roddy Gayle with 13 points, followed by Trent Scott and Zack Clayborne with 6, and Jason Boslet with 3.

The Lancers led, 28-12 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Gayle extended the Lancers lead to 21 with breakaway windmill dunk that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

The Falcons cut the lead to 15 after a 3-pointer from Andy Devantier and then five straight points from Davon Ware, but every time N-W could muster offense, the defense would falter, and the Lancers would take advantage.

L-P followed the Falcons run with a 9-0 spurt of their own to make it a 24-point game.

At halftime, the Lancers led, 52-27.

Despite scoring the first bucket of the third quarter, the Falcons’ woe continued in the third.

With the score 52-29, the Lancers embarked on a 15-0 run, including three 3-pointers from the likes of Scott, Jalen Duff and Jack Bernstein.

Duff added 10 points in the third, and the Lancers took a 79-37 lead into the fourth quarter.

The two teams cleared their benches for the fourth quarter, but the Lancers still managed five 3-pointers in the frame. L-P managed 15 3-balls for the game and would finish with a 100-53 victory.

For the Lancers (9-0), Gayle led the way with 20 points, while Duff, Scott and Bernstein netted 18,17 and 11, respectively. In addition to the four, L-P also had seven more players crack the scorer’s sheet with points.

For the Falcons (3-6), Davon Ware led the way with 15, while freshman TJ Robinson added 12. N-W’s next game is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday versus Grand Island.

For the Lancers, the team’s next contest is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at North Tonawanda.
