Residents and businesses in the Village of Lewiston were unexpectedly without electricity for about a half-hour Monday afternoon as National Grid made repairs to substation 087 at North Fifth and Oneida streets.

“Around noon today, up in Lewiston, we had a piece of faulty equipment that needed repair,” said National Grid media spokesman David Bertola. Specifically, a circuit breaker was fixed, and “the nature of the repair required us to shut power down and to de-energize it and fire everything back up again.”

Bertola said that, while the repair took less than 10 minutes, power had to be restored in phases, which took about 30 minutes.

In all, 1,315 neighboring customers were temporarily left without power.

In a situation like what happened today, Bertola said customers with smartphones could always look to the National Grid website for more information (https://www.nationalgridus.com/Upstate-NY-Home/Storms-Outages/Outage-Map). While the circuit breaker fix was routine and wouldn’t necessarily be posted, the utility’s website does have an outage map. That is the recommended place to check for updates on when power is likely to return (estimated time of restoration, or ETR).

Both residential and commercial customers also can report an outage at 1-800-867-5222.

The outage was unexpected in that the maintenance wasn't planned, nor was the weather threatening.
