Dozens of Lewiston-Porter Elementary School students are rehearsing for the first public performance of the new Tuscarora Heroes song, which will be featured at this year’s annual remembrance ceremony. The event is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at the monument, located at Portage Road and Center Street in Lewiston.

The community is invited to attend this free event. It will be the 205th anniversary of the Tuscarora Nation’s brave actions to save dozens of Lewiston residents from an 1813 British attack during the War of 1812.

Lew-Port teachers Joy Khatib, Katie Danahy and Michelle Zachary have been working with the students as the Lew-Port fourth- and fifth-grade multi-age service learning class prepares for the event. Volunteer Sarah Waechter has been working on the student costumes, as each pupil will be dressed in clothing portraying the exodus of local citizens who were forced to run for their lives in the pre-dawn hours of Dec. 19, 1813.

After the performance, all those in attendance will be treated to hot chocolate and breakfast treats in the warming tent across the street at Academy Park. The students will also receive a special commemorative gift.

Inside the tent, the Tuscaroras will be presented a plaque that reproduces a recently published article in New York Archives Magazine about their courageous actions during the War of 1812. The Archives Magazine is the official publication of the New York State History Museum.

Volunteers from the Historical Association of Lewiston are organizing the event. The presenting sponsor is Rocco DelGrosso of Krislyn Construction Co. Special thanks to Karen Yager, and Lew-Port aides Rhoda O’Shea and Liz Shepherd for their contributions to the event.

Student performers will include: Hersh Ahuja, James Ashley, Jillian Barker, Mariana Bucelato, Michael Cardamone, Kiersten Elliott, Skylar Elliot, Amelia Fanizzi, Bella Harasimowicz, Parker Harden, Gavin Heath, Alexander Hylinger, Grant Joic, Lydia Kofahl, Chloe Larson, Isaac Manuse, Jayson McFarland, Aubrey McKenzie, Landon Nowak, Caleb Pierce, Makenna Quarantillo, Amelia Skowronski, Sarah Woock, Lizzie Adamson, Tiffany Baldassara, Makalyn DeGolier, John Donnelley, Sammy Draper, Maddy George, Lillian Howard, Paige Ingram, Sydney Jokic, Olivia Kozlowski, Lillian Fusco, Matthew Krassopoulos, Angelo Monteleone, Mackenzy Reagan, Kennedy Ruest, Lilah Skurski, Samuel Streb, Brandon Tamul, Liam Toczek, Robert Tomlinson, Maya Radder and Zach Radder.
