Grand Island: Students pay homage to late teacher

Students in the Grand Island Central School District are honoring fifth-grade teacher and coach Julie Neville, who died this week after a long battle with breast cancer.
Early in the week, the rock in back of Grand Island High School was painted pink with the words "Nevillestrong." Wednesday before their playoff match against Niagara-Wheatfield, members of the boys varsity soccer team wrote "Neville" on athletic tape around their arms and on their shoes.
Senior McKenna Prochaska is organizing a coin drive for breast cancer awareness, and she's decorating the bleachers at Masters Field in all pink in honor of Neville prior to the Vikings' Section VI Football Federation playoff game against South Park. Thursday night, a dozen members of that same Grand Island Vikings varsity football team visited an Island salon and had a pink ribbon, the symbol for breast cancer awareness, shaved into their hair.
Students and staff in the district were encouraged to wear pink to school Friday.
