The Niagara County Democratic Committee announced Lois Gibbs will return home to join a local discussion on environmental issues facing society today and her experiences during Love Canal. This event will take place Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4487 Lake Ave., Lockport. Doors open at 9 a.m. for a meet-and-greet. A short press conference will take place at 9:30 a.m., and discussion to follow at 10 a.m.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Love Canal. The committee stated, "Lois Gibbs leadership brought national attention to the fact that an elementary school was built on top of a toxic chemical dump in Niagara Falls. She created the Love Canal Homeowners Association and was critical in the creation of the Superfund, a federal government-funded source for major disasters."
Democratic Chairman Jason Zona said, "There is no better person to invite to speak on such critical issues relating to the environment in Niagara County than Lois."
Today, Gibbs serves as the executive director of the Center for Health, Environment and Justice, and speaks to communities nationwide about toxic chemicals and children's vulnerability to environmental exposures. She continues to bring her story up to date by tying the Love Canal experience with current issues impacting society.
The environment in Niagara County is a serious topic of debate with issues surrounding the CWM expansion, the uncertain future of the Somerset Power Plant, and preservation of the gorge and waterways.
"Creating a safer environment is a middle-class issue. It's an economic issue. It's a health issue. It's a safety issue. Our party will be committed to a grass-roots approach and focus on building coalitions to solve community-based issues," Zona said.
This event is free of charge.
