The Artpark & Company board of directors held its annual meeting on Tuesday to review the summer destination's diverse season of music, visual arts, theater, public art and education.
The 2018 season presented 126 events, spanning May through August and serving 151,564 park visitors. Artpark's summer programming highlights included Mainstage Theater concerts by The Decemberists, Jack White, and Lindsey Stirling, plus a special concert event featuring Vanessa Williams with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. The Western New York premiere of the community-inclusive production of "The Odyssey" presented a fresh initiative that put the spotlight on the local community members, 200 of whom performed alongside Broadway actors in a full musical production. The two blockbuster outdoor concert series continued with 12 "Tuesdays in the Park presented by M&T Bank" and seven "Coors Light Concerts."
A new "Thursdays on the Terrace" event series featured a paint night, participatory music and dance, film, and an interactive drum circle. The summer season also featured free family programming and new Artpark Percussion Garden installations "Gong Temple" and "Chime Sprouts." The KeyBank Summer Solstice Festival returned this year and featured a world premiere performance by William Close and the Earth Harp Collective joined by dancers choreographed by Jon Lehrer. The free "Music in the Woods" series continued with a varied selection of performances. Null Point artists also returned with their "Sound Garden" series of creative sound making in the lower park.
The board re-elected Dena Armstrong, of Sevenson Environmental, as chairwoman for a third term. Alison Lytle, of Lytle and Associates, and Vince Agnello of Niagara University were re-elected as vice chairs. Stephen Turner of the Bonadio Group will serve as treasurer while Mary Jo Farrell will continue as board secretary.
