Obituary: Frances Horning

Frances Horning, age 98, formerly of Lewiston died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, in the Pines at Machias Nursing Home in Machias, New York.
Frances was born March 1, 1919, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Clarence and Helen (Eichler) Davis. She resided in Lewiston for over 50 years.
Frances was employed as a clerk with United Hotels Co. for two years before attending the State Teachers College in Fredonia. In 1949, Frances organized and taught the first kindergarten class at Stevenson Elementary School in Ransomville. She later taught third grade there for many years and retired in 1974. Frances received a certificate of recognition as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America in 1974. She was sponsored by her former principal, Dennis Mallast.
Frances was a former member of the Lutheran Church of The Messiah in Lewiston. She was a member and held the office of secretary with the Business and Professional Women's Club of Lewiston. Frances was a member and vice president of the Ridgeview Garden Club in Lewiston, and a member of the St. Francis Guild with the craft group of Mount St. Mary's Hospital.
Frances is survived by her children: Linda (Edward) Hale, Paul (Naomi) Horning and Thomas (Jacqueline) Horning; her five grandchildren and a great grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two sisters: Alice Ross and Dorothy Davis; and by two brothers: Robert Davis and Lt. Arthur Davis (a pilot killed in action in World War II).
